Camping Season 1 Episode 1 Recap

Camping Season 1 Episode 1 Recap

Camping Season 1 Episode 1 Recap

HBO’s Camping is a show about a dysfunctional group of people on a camping trip led by a high-strung control freak, Kathryn McSorley-Jodell. The group gets up to hilarious misfortune as she freaks out about the schedule. In the series premiere, Kathryn eagerly checked into a campsite at Town Bear Lake (eight adults, one child, at the Groupon rate).

The Jodells

The Jodells (Kathryn, Walt, and Orvis) are the central family to the show. Kathryn planned the whole trip for Walt’s birthday. She is obsessed about her mildly successful Instagram, her pelvic floor, and the camping trip going according to plan. The trip was supposedly adults only (her rule), but they had brought their son. Kathryn had Walt help her take all the mattresses from the other tents since she needed them for support. And when everyone wanted to swim during their “birds of prey watch”, she couldn’t bring herself to join in.

The Campers

Camping Season 1 Episode 1 Recap

The other couples on the trip were Carleen, Kathryn’s wishy washy sister, and her husband Joe, who brought his stepdaughter, Sol; George, Walt’s best friend, and his wife Nina-Joy, who seemed to have an awkward history with Kathryn; and Miguel, who had just separated from his wife Margaret, and Jandice, his new, free-spirited girlfriend. Kathryn was the last to find out about Miguel and Margaret, which bothered her. She also tried too hard to be friendly with Nina-Joy, who was clearly uncomfortable being around her. And finally, Jandice’s spontaneity threw Kathryn off balance, especially when she jumped into the lake naked and everyone followed.

The Caretakers

Camping Season 1 Episode 1 Recap

The proprietor of the camping ground, Harry, and her wife, lived on a trailer on the property. Harry seemed taken with Kathryn, offering to heat up water for a bath if she wanted. They insisted on giving her a BB gun in case of bears. The Jodells were strictly anti-gun, but somehow the BB gun ended up with them anyway. Their first night there, they heard a noise, and Kathryn started shooting the BBs in different directions. She hit Miguel, who was getting frisky with Jandice outside. Harry dug out the BB and stitched him back up.

Charmed Season 1 Episode 1 Recap

Charmed Season 1 Episode 1 Recap

Charmed Season 1 Episode 1 Recap

Charmed is back, reimagined by The CW and with a new incarnation of the Power of Three. We’ll be recapping a season full of witches, demons, and whitelighters. In this series premiere episode, a new group of Charmed Ones finds out who they are and the power they possess.

Unbound

Marisol Vera was a professor of Women’s Studies and an advocate for victims of sexual harassment and assault. She supported Angela Wu, a student accusing Professor Thaine of sexual assault. When her daughters Mel and Maggie went out one night, a demon murdered her as she worked to unbind her daughters’ powers. When Mel and Maggie reunited with Marisol’s third daughter Macy, they became the Charmed Ones. Their whitelighter, Harry Greenwood, insisted that it was their choice to accept their powers, but it had to be unanimous.

The Power of Three

Charmed Season 1 Episode 1 Recap

Mel Vera was a strong-minded advocate for women’s issues, similar to her mother. She protested passionately over Professor Thaine’s reinstatement after Marisol’s death and Angela Wu’s hospitalization due to overdose. Mel had dated Det. Nico Hamada, who broke up with her because Mel distanced herself when Marisol died. She discovered she had freezing powers, which she could control when she wasn’t angry. She could freeze her surroundings, which helped her get back together with Nico.

Maggie was the youngest sister. She was a freshman in college, who was rushing a sorority while avoiding her ex-boyfriend, Brian. Maggie could read people’s minds at a touch. She suspected the demon after her was one of the sorority girls, and reading their minds reinforced that idea.

Macy Vaughn was Marisol’s daughter, though she had a different father. She was a scientist and was working under Professor Thaine. Her power was telekinesis, which she learned how to control quickly. She struggled with her mother leaving her, but Mel and Maggie welcomed her into the family. By the end of the episode, she moved into their house.

Three Signs

Charmed Season 1 Episode 1 Recap

Harry explained there were three signs of the apocalypse. The first was “basically the current president”. The second was a string of witches, including Marisol, dying. The third sign was one they didn’t know yet, but was characterized as the “awakening of the source of all evil”. It would be the Charmed Ones’ responsibility to stop the apocalypse. Harry insisted that they call for him if they ever needed him.

When Maggie was attacked by a demon dog, they searched for the dog’s demonic owner. Her ex-boyfriend Brian, not the sorority girl, turned out to be possessed by a demon. Macy scientifically deduced that baking soda would neutralize him. However, it wasn’t cold when he was around, leading them to conclude he wasn’t the demon responsible for their mother’s death. It was Professor Thaine, who was actually an upper-level demon called Taydeus, and he drained strong women of their strength. With the Power of Three, they vanquished him.

The episode ended with them contacting Marisol through a Ouija board. The board told them, “Don’t trust Harry.”

Don Mancini Reveals More Details About Child’s Play TV Series

Chucky: Don Mancini Reveals More Details About TV Series

Don Mancini reveals more details about Child’s Play TV series

Speaking at the 2018 Screamfest, writer Don Mancini along with producer David Kirschner offered more details about the forthcoming Child’s Play TV series which is still currently in development. Mancini confirmed that the series will be set right after the events of the 2017 film Cult of Chucky.

RELATED: Child’s Play: The TV Series Confirmed by Don Mancini

“We deliberately ended Cult with a bunch of cliffhangers to set up a TV series,” Mancini said (via Bloody Disgusting). “Because there are so many different threads now, television could best accommodate that so that was done intentionally. At the same time, we have a whole new world, a bunch of new characters which we can say nothing about.”

Mancini also said that the new series “involves children,” with Kirschner confirming they’d go back to the roots of the series:

“The only thing I think we can say is from the original film that Don wrote, Child’s Play, we are playing with that concept again, the idea of child’s play,” Kirschner said. “I’ll let you guys fill in the pieces of that.”

“We saw that after seven movies, how can we flip again?” Mancini added “So this time not by merely changing genre but by changing medium. This will give us a different kind of canvas, a much bigger canvas to explore characters and relationships.”

It was previously reported in February that a series was in early development from Mancini and producer David Kirschner in addition to future films, and this new announcement seals the deal on the red-headed psychopath bringing his mayhem to television. Mancini’s previous discussion said the film’s story arc will continue with the series, marking a unique connection between a film and TV series.

The Child’s Play series has been running for 30 years, with the first film dropping in 1988 to box office success, generally positive reviews and a cult following, spawning six sequels that remained box office successes but slowly started earning more mixed and negative reviews, until the revitalized Curse of Chucky, which returned to the franchise’s horror roots and earned very positive reviews. The most recent installment, Cult of Chucky, was released on Blu-ray and video on demand last October and received strong reviews from critics. Brad Dourif has been a staple of the franchise since its inception, lending his voice to the murderous doll in all of the films.

The crossover will start with The Flash on Sunday, December 9. Arrow will continue the story on Monday, December 10, before it all comes to an end in Supergirl on Tuesday, December 11. DC’s Legends of Tomorrow is sitting out of this year’s event, and Black Lightning has yet to establish any firm links with the Arrowverse.

This story will mark Ruby Rose’s debut as Kate Kane, a.k.a. Batwoman. While Kate is Bruce Wayne’s cousin in the DC Universe, the Batman isn’t expected to appear in this story or anywhere else in the Arrowverse any time soon. That said, Batman does exist in this world, and Oliver Queen called him out by name last season on Arrow.

First Watchmen teaser image released for Damon Lindelof’s HBO series

HBO has launched their official Watchmen Instagram account with a sneak peek at the first teaser image for Damon Lindelof’s upcoming graphic novel series adaptation. Check it out below and let us know what you think!

Set in an alternate history where “superheroes” are treated as outlaws, Watchmen embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel while attempting to break new ground of its own.

Originally published as a 12-issue miniseries beginning in 1986, Watchmen quickly become one of sequential art’s most acclaimed stories. The original story centers on a murder-mystery before unfolding into a planet-altering conspiracy that ultimately asks where the fine line is drawn between heroes and villains.

RELATED: Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross Will Score HBO’s Watchmen

In a letter to fans, Lindelof made it clear that the Watchmen series won’t be an adaptation of the comics, but an original story with new faces and unknown characters introduced into the universe that he intends to remix.

The pilot is already made up of an ensemble cast that includes Jeremy Irons (Justice League), Regina King (The Leftovers), Don Johnson (Django Unchained), Louis Gossett Jr. (Hap and Leonard), Tim Blake Nelson (Colossal), Adelaide Clemens (Rectify), Andrew Howard (Bates Motel), Frances Fisher (Masters of Sex), Jacob Ming-Trent (White Famous), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (The Handmaid’s Tale), Sara Vickers (The Crown), and Tom Mison (Sleepy Hollow).

Since the 2009 film adaptation was released, DC Comics released an extensive “Before Watchmen” comic line, telling stories from the pasts of the central characters. More recently, DC Comics has made efforts to integrate Watchmen into the broader DC Multiverse with their Doomsday Clock series.

Lindelof serves as creator, writer, showrunner, and executive producer on the Watchmen series, with Tom Spezialy, Stephen Williams, and Joseph Iberti also executive producing. Nicole Kassell will executive produce and direct the pilot. The series comes from Lindelof’s White Rabbit in association with Warner Bros. Television and is based on the DC Comics characters.

The Deuce Season 2 Episode 6 Recap

The Deuce Season 2 Episode 6 Recap

The Deuce Season 2 Episode 6 Recap

In the previous episode of HBO’s The Deuce, Eileen asked Frankie to co-produce her film, Bobby was arrested, and Big Mike and Black Frankie pulled off a robbery. In this episode, production began on Little Red Riding Hood.

Aunt Sue

Filming for Eileen’s film was underway, and while she came across some problems, she dealt with them easily. The actor playing the wolf quit over the working conditions, so Eileen cast Larry instead. He improved upon the script and was perfect for the role.

Without permits, the production employed guerilla filming tactics. Cops showed up to a scene in a parking lot, but they let them get away with it in exchange for watching. They also mistakenly beat up and arrested Larry for chasing Lori while filming. Frankie’s wife, Tina, wasn’t working out as the grandmother, so Eileen would have to replace her as Aunt Sue. However, the main issue was still funding.

Two Left Feet

The Deuce Season 2 Episode 6 Recap

As co-producer, Frankie tried to come up with more money. He joined Big Mike and Black Frankie on a heist to steal a truck full of shoes. Unfortunately, because their targets were expecting it, left and right shoes were separated into different trucks, rendering their score useless. While everyone had a laugh about it, Frankie still needed the money. Rudy came along with Frankie to watch filming from across the street. He was very impressed and offered Frankie $20,000 for a 25% stake. Frankie brought the money back to Eileen, but didn’t tell her that it was mob money.

“Pay Your Fines”

The Deuce Season 2 Episode 6 Recap

Bobby only had to pay some fines for his arrest. However, his son, Joey, was arrested for fighting soon after. When he picked his son up from the police station, Bobby took him to Vincent’s club for a job as a bar back. He wanted to give his son a dose of reality to set him straight with a job. But Joey was only seventeen years old, and the club operated late into the night. Bobby settled for Joey working at the massage parlor, cleaning.

“I Knew”

The Deuce Season 2 Episode 6 Recap

Abby was even more involved with Dave and Dorothy’s cause. They had settled on an agreement between the pimps and the tenants on when to operate. Abby discussed it with the neighborhood council, arguing that arresting women for prostitution only held them down since the pimps were never arrested.

After noticing a car watching him, Vincent finally told Abby about his involvement with the parlors and the mob, and she admitted she knew. He was in too deep with the mob, and he didn’t know how to get out of it. Vincent said he would no longer take money from the parlors and handed over his take to Abby. He thought she should use it to help the prostitutes. At first, she refused it. But when a woman needed a bus ticket back home, she gave them the money.

Amazon’s Transparent Will Return to TV as a Musical

Transparent will return to TV as a musical

Amazon’s Transparent will return to TV as a musical

Transparent creator Jill Soloway is bringing a musical version of their transgender family dramedy to Amazon, per an interview in The New York Times (via EW). The musical will be two hours long and is eyeing a premiere date on Amazon Prime Video sometime in the fall of 2019.

It will hopefully feel like Jesus Christ Superstar mixed with La La Land mixed with Flight of the Conchords with something more Jewish thrown in. A little Yentl,” Soloway said.

At this point, it’s not known if this musical will affect the upcoming fifth (and possibly final) season of Transparent, which is apparently still under consideration by the streaming platform.

“Jill has a great idea about how she wants to close it. We’re talking about, is it a full series? Is it a limited special? Is it a movie? What is it? There’s a conversation around what form best serves the creative,” Amazon Studios Chief Jennifer Salke told The Hollywood Reporter this summer.

Written, directed and executive produced by multi-award winner Soloway, Transparent is a half hour novelistic series that explores family, identity, sex, and love. The series previously starred Jeffrey Tambor (Arrested Development) as Maura — who was fired earlier this year after harassment claims. When Maura reintroduces herself to her family, everyone else’s secrets finally start to come out. This includes her ex-wife Shelly (Judith Light), and their children—meandering Ali (Gaby Hoffmann), music producer Josh (Jay Duplass), and sexually conflicted Sarah (Amy Landecker). Each family member spins in a different direction as they figure out who they won’t become.

BBC Debuts the New Doctor Who Opening Credits Sequence

BBC Debuts the New Doctor Who Opening Credits Sequence

There’s a new Doctor at the helm of the Tardis in BBC’s Doctor Who. And that means everything is new again, including the Tardis and the Doctor herself! Jodie Whittaker made her official debut as the Thirteenth Doctor in last week’s season premiere. Tonight’s second episode, “The Ghost Monument,” will feature the debut of the new opening credits sequence. But you won’t have to wait long to see it, since BBC has already released it online.

Via the official BBC Doctor Who twitter account, the new opening titles seem to eschew the traditionally used imagery, and even the Tardis is noticeably absent. The reworked Doctor Who theme is also noticeably less bombastic than the most recently used versions.

BBC also released a new promo video that explores the newly redesigned Tardis for Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor. Every Doctor tends to get their own unique Tardis, and this one is no exception. Production Designer Arwel Wyn Jones hosted the behind-the-scenes look at the new Tardis, and he also explained some of the choices that were made in its design. Doctor Who executive producer Matt Strevens also shared his thoughts about the new Tardis.

“We wanted it to feel quite organic and tactile again,” said Strevens. “So it’s not a very digital Tardis, it’s much more of a functional, practical kind of Tardis.”

You can check out the full video below. New episodes of Doctor Who season 11 are airing every Sunday night on BBC America. What do you think about the new Doctor Who opening sequence and the new Tardis? Let us know in the comment section below!

Insecure Season 3 Recap

Insecure Season 1 Episode 5 Recap

Insecure Season 3 Recap

Season 3 of HBO’s Insecure has come to an end. With Lawrence’s absence for most of the season, the stories of the season focused on Issa and Molly’s professional and personal development. To close out the season, we recap the changes Issa and Molly went through in these aspects.

Issa and Her Hustle

Insecure Season 3 Episode 1 Recap

At the beginning of the season, Issa was out of fieldwork in her job at We Got Y’all. She tried to transform the problematic aspects of the job, but once she had, she realized that she needed to move on. Issa wanted to incorporate her love for music with the non-profit world. By the end of the season, she interviewed for an organization with that mission.

To make ends meet, Issa drove with Lyft and managed an apartment building. She had gone from staying on Daniel’s couch to decorating her own place. But it was an idea to throw a block party in Inglewood that drove her through the second half of the season. Despite roadblocks, she ended the season with renewed vigor and some help to make her block party a reality.

Issa and Her Love Life

Insecure Season 3 Episode 3 Recap

Issa’s love life was no less complicated this season. She started the season staying at Daniel’s apartment. However, once they started getting too close, Issa pulled the plug and moved out. Next, Issa ran into Nathan, a former passenger in her Lyft. Nathan moved to LA from Houston. Issa got to know him by ditching work to show him around. However, Nathan ghosted her after confessing his feelings for her. When he asked her for a second chance, Issa left him without an answer.

Finally, we caught up with Lawrence. He played the field but was unsatisfied. He seemed to be headed back to Issa as the two were in a good place. But we saw him on a date with Issa’s new friend Condola, which may cause some drama in the next season.

Molly and Her Focus

Insecure Season 3 Episode 6 Recap

Molly started off the season with renewed commitment to her professional life. She broke things off with Dro and committed herself to getting on the partner track at her new firm. But her ambition isolated her from her colleagues as she undercut them to get ahead. After a wake-up call from Issa, Molly realized her ruthlessness was spilling into her personal life. She also realized she didn’t give Nathan’s friend Andrew a chance and apologized to him for her selfishness.

Iron Fist Star Finn Jones Reacts To the Cancellation of the Series

Iron Fist Star Finn Jones Reacts To the Cancellation of the Series

Last night, Netfix made the surprise announcement that Marvel’s Iron Fist had been canceled after two seasons. It was an abrupt end for the series, which had a critical turnaround in its recently concluded second season. Finn Jones portrayed the title character of Iron Fist in his own series and in The Defenders crossover event. Shortly after the news broke, Jones posted a response on his Instagram account in which he expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to be a part of the show.

Could Iron Fist have “a new beginning” as teased by Jones? The news about the series’ cancellation was so sudden that contingency plans for Iron Fist/Danny Rand don’t appear to be in place. Deadline hinted that Disney’s streaming service is considering whether to pick up Iron Fist for a third season. Another possibility could combine the cast of Iron Fist with Luke Cage for a potential Heroes For Hire series. However, Deadline’s initial report also indicated that a Luke Cage season 3 order is expected at any time. And if Iron Fist does find a new home on Disney’s streaming service, it could possibly complicate any future crossovers between the two shows.

The Romanoffs Season 1 Episode 1 Recap

The Romanoffs Season 1 Episode 1 Recap

The Romanoffs Season 1 Episode 1 Recap

Amazon’s The Romanoffs tells the stories of people who believe they are descendants of the Romanovs. Each episode tells a new story in a different part of the world. This episode, set in Paris, follows Anastasia “Anushka” LaCharnay and her American nephew, Greg Moffat.

The Apartment

Anusha was an older woman, who had been “dying” for four years. She had collapsed and was rushed to the hospital. Greg arrived at the hospital after canceling his vacation with his girlfriend. When he brought her back to her luxurious apartment, she promptly fired her caregiver for leaving her dog alone. When the new caregiver, Hajar, arrived at the apartment, Anushka was immediately distrustful of her. She was a Muslim woman, who was studying to be a nurse. When she complained to Greg, he commented that she had fired all the other ones from the agency.

Anushka begrudgingly tolerated Hajar’s presence, but they eventually grew close. She told Hajar about her family’s history. Hajar was particularly interested in the FabergĂ© egg that turned out to be fake since the original was stolen by the Nazis. Anushka spoke of her son, who had drowned, when the night had ominously turned violet. When Anushka collapsed again, Hajar was the only one there to take care of her since Greg hadn’t answered his phone. Anushka amended her will to leave her apartment to Hajar instead of Greg.

The Hotel

The Romanoffs Season 1 Episode 1 Recap

Greg and his girlfriend Sophie ran the Hotel Palais. Sophie hated Anushka and was simply waiting for her to die so Greg could inherit her apartment. For now, they stayed at the hotel, and they commented to their friends how patrons were becoming lower class despite the cost of staying there. Sophie believed that Greg lacked ambition, and when Anushka left the apartment to Hajar, she insisted he take care of it.

He waited for Hajar to leave for the day and insisted on speaking with her. Greg tried to persuade Hajar to refuse the apartment. He admitted to her that he had to try because of Sophie. They spoke about each other’s families. As they left, she fell and scraped her knee, and he took her back to the hotel. They slept together, and after she left, he told Sophie not to worry about the apartment. The next day, Hajar argued with Anushka, who fired her.

Two Months Later

The Romanoffs Season 1 Episode 1 Recap

Greg visited Anushka, and there was a new caregiver. While they went out to the pharmacy, Hajar and her mother showed up at the hotel. Sophie took them to the apartment, and Greg and Anushka were there when they arrived. Sophie had hoped the news that Hajar was pregnant would finally kill Anushka. However, Greg was happy to find out and so was Anushka. All she wanted was for the line to continue. In anger, Sophie stole the fake Fabergé egg and stormed out. We see Anushka looking on at Greg and Hajar together and the night turning violet as she goes to bed.

Jon Favreau Shows Off New The Mandalorian Set Photo

Jon Favreau shows off new The Mandalorian set photo

A new photo from the set of The Mandalorian was posted by series showrunner Jon Favreau on his Instagram account, but the folks over at Making Star Wars have delved deeper into the story to analyze the weapon in said photo. According to the site, the gun just might be the same one used by Boba Fett in the much maligned Star Wars Holiday Special.

Fans will recall that the special featured an animated segment of Boba Fett in action. And, sure enough, a quick look at photos from the segment reveal the famed bounty hunter wielding a gun similar in design to the one seen in the photo. Apparently, the gun is an Amban phase-pulse blaster, a name revealed in the video game The Force Unleashed. What this all means in the grand scheme of things remains unclear. Though, admittedly, it’s a pretty nice Easter egg for Star Wars fans and shows that Favreau has done his homework.

After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.

The directors for the series were officially announced and include Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels) who will direct the first episode. Additional episodes will be directed by  Deborah Chow (Jessica Jones), Rick Famuyiwa (Dope), Bryce Dallas Howard (Solemates), and Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok). The Mandalorian will be executive produced by Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, Kathleen Kennedy, and Colin Wilson. Karen Gilchrist will serve as co-executive producer.

The 10-episode first season will reportedly have a combined budget of $100 million, making each episode worth $10 million. It has also been announced that Disney is currently developing multiple limited series featuring characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe for their upcoming streaming service.

The Mandalorian does not yet have a release date but the Disney direct-to-consumer platform will launch in late 2019.

Here’s a photo of the gun in the Holiday special:
