Bestselling sci-fi novel Beacon 23 heads to the small screen
Hugh Howey’s bestselling sci-fi novel, Beacon 23, is headed to the small screen, per a report from Deadline. Writer Zak Penn (Ready Player One, Avengers) will adapt the novel, which will be produced by independent studio Platform One Media and Spectrum Originals.
Beacon 23 is set in the 23rd Century, where a series of beacons help passing ships avoid disaster. The adaptation will focus on one man who thinks he’ll be able to find peace manning one of these remote space lighthouses, before realizing that he won’t be able to outrun his past.

This will be the second high-profile series order for Spectrum, joining the Bad Boys offshoot L.A.’s Finest starring Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba. This is part of Charter Communications’s overall strategy to keep introducing high-end original content on its Spectrum cable systems to stay afloat in the Peak TV era.
Penn is currently working on a script for Warner Brothers that is set in The Matrix universe, as well as adapting Rom for Hasbro’s Allspark Pictures and Paramount Pictures.
